ALFCEMIND is a co-financed project by the European Commission through the Sixth
Framework Programme (2002-2006) for research, technological development and
demonstration (RTD).
A consortium of 6 partners from Central and SE European countries proposed to
study the use of alternative fuels and secondary raw materials in cement
industry. The overall objective of this project is to assist the take-off of
polygeneration in the cement industry leading to energy, environmental, societal
and economic benefits.
The use of
alternative fuels for cement production has been intensely discussed for many
years and is frequently already adopted in Europe and the US. Nowadays, plants
around the world are starting to use alternative fuels. More recently however,
cement producers have aimed for as flexible as possible a use of large volumes
of the most different secondary fuels. A number of innovative solutions have
been developed by KHD Humboldt Wedag in order to equip cement plants with
systems that can accommodate this trend in the use of alternative fuels and
secondary raw materials.
An ideal system to burn all kinds of fuels is the KHD
PYROCLON® calciner which can be easily adapted to any other
application by special modules. One version is the standard PYROCLON LowNOx
calciner which is recommended especially for primary fuels like lignite, coal,
oil, gas and alternative fuels like liquids and animal meal. Other versions are
PYROCLON LowNOx calciner with ignition module, PYROCLON LowNOx
calciner with combustion chamber and an extended version of standard PYROCLON
LowNOx calciner (more retention time).
Another system for utilization of WDF (Waste Derived Fuels) in the kiln is
the Multi-Channel PYROJET®-Burner with decreased fuel consumption and
low NOx
generation.
